Kadena launches a hybrid platform to connect public, private blockchains

Brooklyn-based spinoff Kadena has launched a hybrid blockchain that can scale horizontally, enabling multiple electronic ledgers to talk to each other via smart contracts – and letting users transfer cryptocurrency between the chains.

Hybrid blockchains combine permissioned chains for businesses to transact in the background while connecting to a public blockchain (via an API) for consumers and others to make money transfers or access information about products moving across supply chains.

“Their hybrid blockchain model looks interesting, mainly because it enables interoperability via smart contracts that run on public chains and talk to/with private chains,” said Avivah Litan, a vice president of research at Gartner. “That way, enterprises can keep their private data and transactions limited to the private chain but benefit from the liquidity and cross-chain access available by leveraging smart contracts running on the public chain.”

Kadena is being piloted for interoperability, scalability and increased security across industries, including financehealthcare and insurance, according to Kadena co-founder and CEO Will Martino. For example, Rymedi, a North Carolina medical technology firm, plans to test the platform this year as part of an FDA-backed pilot of prescription drug tracking via a blockchain supply chain.

Kadena is the first startup to come out of JP Morgan’s Blockchain Center for Excellence, a development project started in 2018. Last year, JP Morgan announced it had created its own cash-backed cryptocurrency called JPM Coin, which it plans to pilot with institutional clients for international funds transfers.

Kadena’s Chainweb platform also relies on sharding to increase transactional throughput by creating multiple proof-of-work consensus-based partitions on its blockchain ledger through which multiple parallel chains can operate.

Because a single platform can be parsed, there’s theoretically no limit to the number parallel chains that can be created on the company’s platform, according to Martino.

“We’ve figured out how to horizontally scale this core concept of the ledger found at Layer 1 without needing to centralize any part of the platform,” Martino said. “It’s a major moment for decentralized distributed systems, as horizontal scaling this far down the stack has been a dream of many for at least a decade.”

In Kadena’s blockchain, Layer 1 is the layer over which currency and a state ledger operates. There is infrastructure beneath Layer 1 related to propagation, peer-to-peer communications, storage, cryptocurrency mining and more, but Layer 1 is where cryptocurrency and smart contracts first show up. 

A metaphor for Layer 1 would be one bank account and three credit cards; the  bank account would be the fundamental Layer 1 ledger, and the three credit cards would represent Layer 2 scaling.

“The cards settle through your bank account, but your bank account doesn’t settle through anything else. Your bank account has a single sequential ledger of transactions, as it has to decide the order of transactions,” Martino said “But, you can do transactions simultaneously on Layer 2 by using more than one card at the same time. Most other blockchain projects are trying to scale via adding cards. Kadena scaled by figuring out how to let you have a bank account at more than one bank.”

So far, the company has gone live with 10 chains on a single platform, but it plans to pilot ones with as many as 50 this year. Kadena’s “braided” blockchain network has so far demonstrated it can process up to 750 transactions per second or 40 terahashes per second (40 trillion hashing operations per second). The higher the number of terahashes, the more difficult it is for someone to attempt to game the system.

“Instead of hashing and mining pointing at a single block, miners can mine blocks for any of 10 chains in a network,” Martino said. “Instead of one chain and one conduit for throughput for transactions, we have 10.”

Gartner’s Litan, however, said Kadena’s technology does have challenges, not the least of which is its permissioned-public hybrid environment. That could complicate challenges that already exist with enterprise blockchain smart contracts.

Those challenges include:

  • Keeping immutable smart contracts current with business agreements, which is already problematic as they represent a shared system of record.
  • Keeping interfaces between off-chain events and data with smart contracts secure and authorized.
  • Maintaining umbrella legal frameworks across network members, as well as clear, documented and agreed-upon governance rules regarding blockchain participation and smart contracts. [Gartner believes] these are needed on top of smart contract automation so that the parties understand exactly what they need to do if things ‘go wrong.’

“Kadena would likely disagree with these challenges, but that’s how we see them,” Litan said.

Kadena’s proprietary smart-contract language called Pact, can also instruct a node (computer) on what the code means, or its purpose. For example, a smart contract coded with Pact can instruct a blockchain ledger to forbid users of cryptocurrency from going into debt, meaning the ledger balance can never go below zero.

“It’s the idea that I can run my code and then write what I intended it to do with it, and the computer can understand both my intent and what code means,” Martino said.

Essentially, the single blockchain platform can host multiple ledgers, each new ledger connected via an API to previous ones. In connecting the ledger, the processing power or hashing capability of nodes is divided among them and cryptocurrency and other data can be shared between the ledgers.

“If one [ledger] gets saturated, it doesn’t affect the throughput of another. You can horizontally scale this,” Martino said.

Kadena is also integrating its digital wallet, Chainweaver, with the Cosmos Network, an inter-blockchain communications protocol that enables multiple blockchains to communicate between one another, enabling cryptocurrency transfers across disparate blockchains.

“Kadena is one of the start-ups that stands out from the crowd,” said Martha Bennett, a Forrester vice president of research. “A key differentiator is the firm’s focus on, and understanding of, the requirements of enterprise-grade systems. Clearly, it’s too soon to tell how much traction Kadena will gain – it’s early days yet. But from a technology perspective, it’s one of the few that I regard as worth watching; the hybrid model is also a differentiator.”

if it’s not on already. When turned on, USB debugging gives you direct access to the file system of an Android device from a desktop computer. Without debugging enabled, it’s only possible to interact with your phone’s media storage, such as the SD card or a specially formatted media directory.

If you’ve already met the requirements, fixing the problem takes about five minutes and three basic steps:

  1. Connect your Android device and PC via USB and remove the ADB drivers. Then disconnect your device.
  2. Run a USB-driver eliminating utility, such as USBDeview, to kill all unnecessary Android drivers.
  3. Install Koush’s Universal ADB Driver.

We’ll go over each step in turn. Here’s the software you need:

Step 1: Connect Your Device and Uninstall the Current Driver

First, connect your Android device to your computer via USB. This step allows your device to display in Windows’s Device Manager. Open this by typing Device Manager into the Start menu to search for it.

Next, in the Device Manager, remove your currently displayed Android ADB driver. To remove it, right-click on the category that contains your phone—this might be LeMobile Android Device, Portable Devices, or something similar.

Under this, you’ll see the Android Composite ADB Interface driver. Right-click this to bring up the context menu, then select Uninstall.

Make sure to check the box for Delete the driver software for this device.

Now you can disconnect your Android device from your PC. Doing this prevents the same incompatible driver from loading upon reconnecting the Android device. While technically not required, we recommend doing this because it will show you the driver causing the issue, in case it somehow reloads itself.

Step 2: Remove Bad ADB Drivers

The Nirsoft USBDeview utility comes as a zipped executable. That means you must unzip it and it doesn’t require installation. This utility may show up as malware in a virus scan, but rest assured that it’s safe.

After unzipping the file, open the extracted folder and run the executable utility inside it. USBDeview displays the total number of installed USB drivers on your computer, both connected and disconnected.

Look for the colored status indicator at the far-left of the USBDeview window. There are four colors. Each represents a different status:

  • Green indicates that the device is connected and that it functions properly.
  • Pink means the device can unplug and works properly (although in reality, it may not actually work properly).
  • Red indicates a disabled USB device.
  • Gray means the device is installed, but not connected.

Now, remove all gray items with the words “Google”, “Linux”, “ADB”, or “Android” in the title. When troubleshooting this issue, we typically remove every item that’s not green.

Removing a device driver means that you’ll need to reinstall drives for that USB device if you want to use it again. Fortunately, most of the time Windows automatically installs USB devices, so it’s not a big deal.

Step 3: Install the Universal Driver

Koush’s Universal ADB Driver works for every Android device, no matter how niche. After installing it, you should be able to assign the right driver to your phone.

Manually Install a USB ADB Driver

To do a manual install, first run the executable package for Koush’s Universal ABD Driver you downloaded earlier, which installs the driver to your computer.

Second, plug your Android device into your PC via USB. The correct USB drivers should load. You can check by going to Device Manager in Windows as discussed earlier. If there is a different driver listed than what you saw in the first step, chances are you have the correct USB driver loaded now.

In the Device Manager, locate the new ADB/USB driver. This will likely be under your phone’s name in the Portable Devices section, but Android devices can appear in different locations in Device Manager. You may need to check each possible device class (such as Android Phone or Samsung) in the Device Manager before you find yours.

If you can’t find it, sometimes you’ll need to check the notification shade on your Android device for additional steps. This allows you to authorize a specific computer to connect to your device beyond charging purposes.

Once you find it, right-click on your device and choose Update Driver. From the resulting menu, choose Browse my computer for driver software, then Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

Here, you will see a list of compatible drivers. Choose one of these (starting at the top if fine). If it fails, repeat the process by going down the list to locate another driver that works.

Install the Universal ABD Driver Instead

If you can’t get the right driver installed using the above method, you will need to perform a manual installation in order for Koush’s driver to work. Thankfully, the Device Manager lets you hand-pick a driver from your computer instead of browsing from a list.

Instead of selecting Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer in the previous step, hit the Browse button and manually find the directory where you installed Koush’s drivers.

The location in File Explorer should be something like this:

C:Program Files (x86)ClockworkModUniversal Adb Drivers

You may need to search for the folder if you don’t see it there. Once you select the right location, hit Next and Windows will install the drivers. From now on, whenever you connect your Android device with ADB enabled, Koush’s drivers will load in place of the ones that failed to work.

Finally, restart your computer and attempt to connect over ADB again. You should have success at this point.

Still Not Able to Connect to ADB?

If you still can’t connect to ADB, your device might have a deeper problem either at the firmware or hardware level. Major hardware issues include the following:

  • A damaged USB port on your computer or smartphone
  • Defective firmware on your smartphone, usually caused by a custom ROM
  • A damaged or defective charging cable

For example, I once owned a Nexus tablet that intermittently disconnected from the computer. Even after replacing the micro-USB port, the tablet continued to malfunction. The cause of disconnection turned out to be a buggy custom ROM. While custom ROMs are great for reviving old hardware, they introduce another layer of complexity that often causes issues.

For example, in newer versions of Android, Google offers native Bluetooth and USB tethering. If your phone has a dual-antenna design, you can even create a hotspot using a Wi-Fi connection.

If EasyTether (or any USB tethering app) fails, the best fix is trying to find the correct driver as outlined above. That means finding the incorrect ADB driver that Windows installed and swapping it out for something that works.

That may require additional troubleshooting steps, so we only recommend these apps for older Android devices that don’t support the latest in tethering technology.

It’s a bit ridiculous that Google never released a universal ADB driver for Android devices, despite the issues that many users continue to experience.

How to Connect Your Android Device to a Projector

Android devices are great, but their small size can sometimes be limiting. When you connect your device to a projector, you can share your screen with others for business or pleasure. Here are a few ways to do it.

If you don’t have a projector, you can also connect Android to a TV. Projectors are the better option, though, as they normally project a much bigger screen size than a TV, making them ideal for media playback or data presentations.

Connect Wirelessly via Chromecast

The easiest method to connect an Android device to a projector is to use Google Chromecast. To do this, your projector must support HDMI connections.

Once you plug your Chromecast into the HDMI port, you can then wirelessly stream your Android device screen to it. Your Chromecast will then display the contents through the projector.

Make sure you’ve disabled any power-save mode on your Android device, as this can reduce the quality of the stream.

If you don’t already have the Google Home app, download and install it from the Google Play Store.

Open the “Home” app, and then tap the Accounts tab in the bottom-right corner.

Scroll down and tap “Mirror Device.”

If you see a warning that your device isn’t optimized for casting, tap “OK.” This shouldn’t prevent you from casting your screen to a Chromecast.

Once you’re connected, your screen should begin streaming to your projector through your Chromecast.

Wired Connections

If a wireless option isn’t suitable, you can use a wired connection instead. All Android devices come with either a microUSB or USB-C option.

With the right cable, you can connect your Android device to a projector that directly uses an HDMI cable. Another supported standard is MHL, which also connects via HDMI ports.

USB-C to HDMI Cable

Newer Android devices, like the latest Samsung phones, use USB-C to charge. If you have a USB-C device, you can use a USB-C to HDMI cable to connect your device directly to an HDMI-capable projector.

You shouldn’t have to do anything other than connect your USB-C device to your projector. Make sure the projector is set to the correct HDMI input.

Be aware, however, that one disadvantage of USB-C to HDMI is lack of power. If you use other wired methods, like MHL, you can power your device while connected.

Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL)

Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) uses specially-designed HDMI cables. Unlike the newer USB-C method, MHL cables use microUSB. As mentioned above, it can also power your device while providing digital video and audio.

Some projectors support HDMI, but you’ll need to look specifically for an HDMI port with an  MHL label on your projector. If you don’t see one, it won’t power your device. Your Android device also has to support MHL.

To connect via MHL, you shouldn’t have to do anything on your Android device, other than connect it to your projector with a suitable cable. On your projector, switch the input to the corresponding MHL HDMI port to see your projected Android screen.

Wireless Connections

Miracast and Wi-Fi Direct are wireless standards that connect devices to other devices like displays. Previously, Android officially supported Miracast but dropped it with Android 6 Marshmallow. Miracast still works with some Android devices, though, because it’s based on Wi-Fi Direct, which is still supported by Android.

Unless both devices specifically state they support Wi-Fi Direct or Miracast, the best way to see if it will connect is to use one of these standards to try it.

To start, on your projector, look for “Screen Mirroring,” “Device Mirroring,” or a similarly named setting, and then switch to that mode.

The best way to connect using Miracast is to use a third-party app, like Castto, to make the connection. As it’s no longer officially supported, using Miracast with modern Android devices is not guaranteed to work.

If that’s the case, use a Chromecast, wired connection, or attempt to use Wi-Fi Direct.

Wi-Fi Direct

If you want to use Wi-Fi Direct, you can do this within Android directly. These steps might vary slightly depending on your version of Android and your device.

You need a projector that supports Wi-Fi Direct and allows you to stream your screen using this method.

To begin, swipe down on your display to access your notification shade, and then tap the gear icon to access your Android “Settings” menu. Alternatively, you can access your “Settings” menu from the apps drawer.

If you’re on a Samsung device, tap “Connections.” On other Android devices, you might need to tap “Network & Internet” instead.

Tap “Wi-Fi” to access the Wi-Fi menu.

Tap "Wi-Fi."

In the Wi-Fi menu, ensure the setting is turned on, and then tap “Wi-Fi Direct.” On other Android devices, you might have to tap “Advanced” or “Wi-Fi Preferences” in this menu first, and then tap “Wi-Fi Direct” to access that menu.

Your device will scan automatically for available Wi-Fi Direct devices. If it locates your projector, tap the option to connect, and then follow the instructions.

Smart View on Samsung Devices

If you own a Samsung device, you can use Smart View to connect to some devices wirelessly. Swipe down your notifications shade and tap “Smart View” in your quick actions list.

Tap "Smart View."

Your device will scan for nearby Chromecast or Miracast devices. Locate your device, and then tap it to connect. Your Samsung device should connect to your projector and begin streaming to it.

Manufacturer Apps

Some projector manufacturers offer their own Android apps that allow you to connect directly to the projector from your device via Wi-Fi.

Apps like Panasonic Wireless Projector, Epson iProjection, and Projector Quick Connection are all examples of apps you could try, depending on the manufacturer of your projector.

These apps might not allow you to project your entire screen, but they should allow you to project static images or document files to your projector. While this wouldn’t be a useful method to stream media, it could come in handy for business presentations.

Does the Wii Have Wi-Fi?

Before we start, you might wonder if the Wii console can connect to Wi-Fi. The answer is Yes, the Wii has Wi-Fi support. The only exception is the Wii Mini, a smaller revision that Nintendo released in 2012-2013. This model does not have any online capabilities.

While you can connect the Wii to the internet, don’t forget that the console is more than a decade old. Because of this, its online functionality is quite limited.

The Wii once had many online functions, including sending messages to friends, playing games with others, and downloading from the Wii Shop Channel. Unfortunately, Nintendo has retired most of these services. So while you can connect the Wii to Wi-Fi, what this enables is fairly underwhelming nowadays.

Nonetheless, let’s take a look at how to connect your Wii to Wi-Fi. We’ll look at what features are no longer available afterwards.

How to Connect Your Wii Console to the Internet

The processing of connecting a Wii to Wi-Fi is simple, and should be familiar to anyone who’s connected a laptop, phone, or other device to Wi-Fi before.

On the Wii Menu, select the Wii button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

Choose Wii Settings from the resulting menu.

Click the arrow on the right side of the screen to move to the second page of options. Here, choose Internet.

On the resulting page, select Connection Settings.

You’ll see three connections here labeled Connection 1, Connection 2, and Connection 3. If you’ve never utilized the Wii’s internet connection features before, these will all say None. Select one to set up a new connection.

If you already have three connections set up, choose one and select Clear settings to erase it.

Connecting Your Wii via Ethernet

Next, you’ll need to decide if you want to connect your Wii to the internet using Wi-Fi or a wired connection. If you want to use a wired connection, connect an Ethernet cable, then select Wired Connection and the test should complete successfully.

The Wii doesn’t have an Ethernet port built-in, so you’ll need to buy the Wii LAN adapter if you want to use a wired connection.

This device connects to the Wii via its USB port, allowing you to connect your console to your router via an Ethernet cable. You’ll find many cheap USB Ethernet adapters on the market, but Nintendo states that third-party units might not work with the Wii.

You’ll probably have the best luck looking for a used official Wii LAN adapter on eBay or similar site if you want to use a wired connection to get your Wii online.

Connecting Your Wii via Wi-Fi

To continue with a wireless connection instead, choose Wireless Connection. Next, select Search for an Access Point to look for nearby Wi-Fi networks.

After the scan completes, select OK to show all wireless networks.

Select your network from the list. You’ll next need to enter your Wi-Fi password so you can get your Wii console online. Additionally, be sure that the security type in the top-left corner is the same as what your router has. If it’s not the same, choose Change Security Settings and pick the right one.

Once this is done, select OK several times to save your settings and test the connection. If you see The connection test was successful, you’re done connecting your Wii to Wi-Fi. Error codes 51330 and 52130 mean that your password was incorrect, so make sure you typed it correctly.

Other Wii Connection Methods

In addition to the above, Nintendo also once offered a device called the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector. This plugged into your computer via USB, and by wirelessly connecting your Wii to it, you could use your computer’s internet connection to get online. Nintendo discontinued this and a successor device, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Network Adapter, years ago.

They were intended for users who had an internet connection for their computer, but didn’t have a wireless router. That applies to very few people nowadays, since Wi-Fi is near-ubiquitous. In addition, drivers aren’t available for Windows 7 or newer, so there’s no reason to purchase one of these.

The Wii’s Graveyard of Online Features

Now that your Wii is online, you might be excited to see everything it can do with the power of the internet. But as mentioned earlier, there’s not much left to see. Nintendo has shuttered most of the Wii’s online functionality, including the following:

  • Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection: This was Nintendo’s online play service that let you play games like Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl with others online. It was shut down in 2014, meaning you can’t play games online at all.
  • WiiConnect24: An always-online service that let you receive content updates even when your system was in standby mode. Because it was discontinued in 2013, you can no longer access content like the News Channel, Forecast Channel, and Everybody Votes Channel.
  • Video streaming: TV streaming apps for the Wii, including Netflix and Hulu, no longer work.
  • Wii Shop Channel: The last vestige of online support for the Wii lived in the Wii Shop Channel. However, in January 2019, Nintendo finally pulled the plug on the Wii’s digital storefront. This means you can no longer download Virtual Console titles, WiiWare games, and Wii channels.

If you’ve previously purchased games or downloaded channels from the Wii Shop Channel, you can redownload them for the time being.

What Can the Wii Do Online?

Because of the Wii’s age, there’s unfortunately not much left to do online. At this point, the only real benefit in connecting your Wii to Wi-Fi is so you can update the console if you haven’t already.

You’ll likely see a prompt to do this when you first connect to the internet. If not, head to the Wii Settings menu again and scroll over the third page. Choose Wii System Update here and accept the message.

This won’t add any new exciting features as the last system update was in 2012, but it’s worth doing since you took the time to get online.

If you downloaded the Internet Channel in the past, you can continue to use this to browse the internet. However, this browser is extremely outdated, so you’re better off accessing the web from another device.

Aside from this, you’ll still find two channels available on the Wii Shop Channel. One fixes a game-breaking glitch in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. The other is a transfer tool that allows you to transfer your Wii data to a Wii U.

The former is a replacement for WiiConnect24 that restores access to several of the aforementioned channels, while the latter allows you to play games online again.
